Builders Outreach Foundation Dream Homes
The Builders Outreach Foundation (BOF) is the charitable arm of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC). Making a difference…One home at a time is BOF’s motto and they have been hard at work doing just that for more than 17 years. BOF was initiated as a way to promote home ownership opportunities for those whose financial condition puts them below the level of publicly subsidized affordable homes. It was also established as a way to contribute to the revitalization of our core cities. Since BATC has nearly 1,600 professional members and associates, BOF is in the unique position to access to the best, most professional resources in the home building community.
Since its inception in 1992, BOF has completed 17 projects to provide affordable workforce housing for families in the Twin Cities and surrounding communities. It has also been involved with numerous smaller projects that fit its mission, and assisted Habitat for Humanity when they built five homes in their Aspen Grove Development in Burnsville, MN.
In 2008 BOF completed a full home remodel in conjunction with BATC members, BATC associates and the BATC Remodelers Council. A young Marine veteran who had sustained serious injuries in the Iraq war needed his home modified to accommodate his rehabilitation needs. Operation Dream Makeover, as this project was called, became a rallying point for many Minnesotans. It was “Minnesota's own version of ABC's “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” according to an October 9, 2007 article in the Pioneer Press. Operation Dream Makeover was featured in the Spring 2008 Parade of Homes Remodelers ShowcaseSM and in March of 2008 Governor Tim Pawlenty was the featured speaker at our Big Reveal event when the “new” home was presented to this courageous veteran and his family. In the end we accomplished so much more than our original goal of making his home more comfortable and accessible.
In the current economic downturn, affordable workforce housing and neighborhood stabilization is more critical than ever. BOF is in a unique position to assist with these needs and continues to touch lives through their work. A woman whose family now owns a BOF home said it best:
“My life dream has always been of owning my own home…of having something my kids could hold on to, a future, a goal, security. These are the things most important to me and worth reaching out for. I’ve volunteered for Habitat [For Humanity] to help build homes for others. Thank you for this opportunity of a lifetime.”

Dream Home #77
Zawadski Homes, Inc.
Owasso Bay
2900 W. Owasso Blvd., Roseville
$1,600,000
Standing the test of time.
Every intricate part of this 6,600 square foot Dream Home is the result of synergy between a grounded builder, visionary architect, gifted designer and trusting home owners. And it’s apparent from the moment you arrive to this hidden, lakeside hollow.
Stepping through the arched front entrance into the foyer you’ll find a dropped cove ceiling with hidden rope lighting glowing from behind layered crown moulding. You’ll also notice that the lake itself is a major player in the home’s layout. The majority of the open main floor showcases expansive lakeshore views.
Spaces are defined more often by slight color and textural differences than confining walls. The strap ceiling of the formal dining room gives way under arched half walls to the kitchen. There is a cohesiveness in design and purpose which creates unpretentious, livable spaces adorned with well placed art niches.
The clean-lined cabinetry and state-of-the-art appliances rest beneath a slightly vaulted tray ceiling finished in alder beadboard directly above the island. Throughout the home white enameled trim contrasts with darker mediums like the brazilian cherry flooring.
The elegant four season porch, done with wainscot walls and beadboard ceiling, has become a Zawadski Homes’ signature piece. The study features cherry built-ins, and the music-room was designed to let sound resonate.
As you step up into the owners’ suite, its sitting room pulls you in to enjoy a birds eye view of the lake. A cased half-wall keeps this space semi-private from the bedroom proper. Your jaw may drop as you enter the 131 square foot closet, which, thanks to its ten and a half foot high ceilings, has three levels of clothes hanging storage, women on the tour rejoice! The accompanying bath has all the extras you’d find in a spa, all finished in colors to soothe the soul.
The upper level is laid out to feel private and spacious at the same time. Steep vaulted ceilings in the two children’s bedrooms enchant like fairy tale towers. And the bonus room serves equally well as home office, craft room, or kids’ game space.
More family space down includes an exercise room plus a step-down, oval home theater boasting state-of-the-art audio visual equipment with maroon and gold velvet seating, standing ovations resound.
Trusses selected to maximize livable space, geothermal heating and cooling for efficiency today and tomorrow, plus the bonus beneath-the-garage space (thanks to BATC member Molin Concrete Products Company) for boat and patio storage. Flagstone walls terrace the way to the lake. And pavered patios encompass the Trex deck, designed to become the setting for many a relaxing summer weekend.
Zawadski Homes, a small yet bold company thrives on creative designs and challenges. In this Dream Home they have met the challenge to create serene lake living with style and grace.
This is a Lake-side Dream Home you won’t want to miss. And, your $5.00 admission is tax-deductible, aiding the Builders Outreach Foundation continue their work helping deserving families attain their dream of homeownership. Enjoy your tour!
Dream Home #283
Hendel Homes
5625 Christmas Lake Point
Shorewood MN 55331
$3,900,000s
Old World Style for today.
This stunning home nestles into a hill overlooking Christmas Lake. The designers took full advantage of its distinct topography, including unique walkouts out from each of the three levels.
The homeowners wanted to "live in the roof" which led to a central tower that lets in light from all sides. The tower was designed to look as if it has been in place since antiquity. The same stonework is found in both interior and exterior applications, adding to the feeling that the “old” structure has been preserved, discovered and revealed. The tall, sweeping roof lines and its air of a European country estate is demonstrated in the materials and colors that blend with nature. The half-round cooper gutters and barreled roofs are enhanced by the multi-colored synthetic slate tiles.
Every square inch of the 8,700 square-foot interior is meticulously planned for how the homeowners will live, with selections that are comfortable and at the same time beautiful. The home features a stone arched entry leading to the great room, with its soaring 27-foot vaulted ceiling finished in reclaimed barn wood and framed with hand-hewn, arched timber trusses. This room also features an authentic wood-burning arched fireplace with an oversized cast-stone mantle. The second-floor study has a built-in daybed overlooking this room.
The kitchen is every chef's dream with granite countertops, handmade cooper range hood, and a 14-foot island bordered in butcher block ends made of Wenge and walnut, adorned by a striking piece of furniture that houses a separate refrigerator and freezer. The kitchen also has reclaimed timber beams with a wormy, chestnut-paneled inset ceiling to match the mantel in the adjacent hearth room.
The first floor has wide plank, hand-scraped wood floors featuring an inlaid medallion. Even the elevator door is adorned with a hand carved “coat of arms” made specifically for the homeowners. Careful planning makes entertaining easy; placing the wine cellar on the first floor allows for views of the groin-vaulted brick ceiling while passing thru the unique iron door to easily chose the evening’s selection.
At the far end of the home is a "tree" room with 270-degree views of the lake and landscape, topped by a steeply vaulted wooden ceiling with porthole windows. Enjoy breathtaking views of the lake from the master bath’s private balcony. It features a hand-painted barreled ceiling, chromatherapy steam shower, and a whirlpool bath with wrap-around center bench.
Stone arches welcome you into the lower level, complete with a theater and fireplace. There is also a bar inspired from an Irish pub built into more stone arches. Two staircases and an elevator make it easy to get from level to level.
As you tour this magnificent and intimate home, you’ll notice that no two rooms are the same. Finding surprises around every corner, you’ll know you have spent your $5 donation wisely by visiting another spectacular Dream Home to benefit the Builders Outreach Foundation.
