Two Dream Remodeled Homes to Benefit the Builders Outreach Foundation
9/24/2007

During each of the Parade of HomesSM tours, the public has an opportunity to help low-income families achieve the dream of owning their own home when they visit the Builders Outreach Foundation Dream Homes. This year, that includes two very special Dream Remodeled Homes featured during the 2007 Parade of Homes Remodelers ShowcaseSM.

All visitors to these two fabulous Dream Remodeled Homes are asked to make a tax-deductible $5.00 donation at the door. All proceeds will be used by the Builders Outreach Foundation, the charitable arm of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities, to help continue their work building homes for families that otherwise couldn’t afford one, mostly in the Frogtown area of St. Paul, and this year, in the remodeling of the home of an wounded Iraqi veteran in Operation Dream Makeover. All other remodeling projects are open for viewing at no cost.

An Inspired Design with a Green Perspective

A family’s love of a St. Paul neighborhood fueled the inspiration for transforming this home into a singular mix of complementary styles. After looking for their perfect home long enough, this family did what more and more families today are doing, buying based on location and neighborhood, and modifying the structure to create the dream, right where they want it to be.

Strikingly original, naturally comfortable, and casually elegant; all describe this inspired whole house renovation in St. Paul’s bustling Macalester-Groveland neighborhood. Without expanding the original footprint or upsetting the tone of their beloved neighborhood, the owners have succeeded in creating a home that fits their personal needs and style. The unique design subtly melds Asian, Prairie, and Arts and Crafts styling, even a touch of modern art, all founded on a concern for environmentally correct building materials, processes and furnishings.

Like all good art, this home reveals more of itself the more time you spend in it. The simple yet classic 1920’s-built stucco home now at 2,800 finished square feet (previously 1,800) gracefully opens up inside. The home’s rejuvenation made the spaces within more livable with a new owners’ suite, bedroom, renovated baths, kitchen and great room space. Natural wood, metal and stone accents throughout both the interior and exterior work together to create a flow throughout the entire structure that’s both energizing and soothing. In short, it’s got great Feng Shui.

Designer Dave Wagner of SALA Architects drew on his West coast experience to seamlessly integrate the natural and built environments. With Mike Otto Construction implementing the vision, this project demonstrates how local homeowners can transform a house that they love in spite of its faults, into a home that beautifully supports their family’s growth.

From the rift-sawn red oak floors and natural beech cabinetry inside to the earthy green stucco and cedar shingles out, the home breaths life. Outside, an innovative use of galvanized steel for downspouts and flashing highlights the warm cedar shingles and trim, while round, steel engine block plugs accent the long squared support columns of both the front and back entries. The deep overhanging roof, coupled with a bluestone walkway that reaches to the street, beckon visitors toward the friendly new front porch, which seems be a part of the original 1920’s design.

Building “green” was implemented through various practices such as using Low volatile organic chemicals (VOC) paint, recycled aluminum light fixtures, energy efficient in-floor heating and local Minnesota granite counter tops. The house displays its playful side with cubbies for the family’s three young boys, and a beautiful wall of beech cabinet boxes composed in a fashion evocative of a Mondrian painting. Constructed of formaldehyde-free wood, the cabinets remind us that when form can play ”nice” with function everybody wins.

A Contemporary Perspective on Classic Design

Nestled in a desirable neighborhood just off Lake Harriet, this turn of the century home demonstrates how traditional style can feel comfortably current under the combined efforts of designer, builder and homeowner. The remodel of this historic home stayed true to its classic architecture while adding an overlay of sophistication with formal Mediterranean components. The hand-forged artisan wrought iron work both anchors the style of the home and thematically connects the various living areas to one another.

You’ll want to take time to enjoy the lavish spaces designed to bring family and friends together. This whole home renovation and addition introduced new function while keeping true to the home’s original character. The kitchen is a masterpiece that makes you feel like a chef even when you simply set out restaurant-made hors d’oeuvres and open a bottle of wine. The space is lined with traditionally crafted cabinetry and extensive custom millwork. The interplay of timeless materials such as marble and Brazilian walnut floors with the crisp white enameled cabinetry maintains the understated elegance. The focal point: a top-line commercial range housed within a gorgeous cooking alcove with a mix of white marble and tiles beneath an intricately carved range hood.

French doors in the breakfast room bring the outdoors in, and offer easy access to the grilling terrace surrounded by stucco columns and more of the signature filagree wrought iron. The home escorts you through elegantly arched openings into living areas that are well proportioned and in keeping with the home’s grandeur. Antique mosaic tiles and hand-carved Indiana limestone compose the arched fire hearth. The materials, once again, work together to create a seamless transition from the turn-of-the-century to the present.

Stonewood Renovation’s skilled craftsmen approach each renovation with an understanding of and respect for the original feel of a home, embedding the new with a true sense of place. More than simply building something new out of something old, a Stonewood renovation preserves the best of a home while enhancing it with new and authentic spaces.
