A MN GreenStar Prairie Homestead

While Laura Ingalls Wilder may have recognized the prairie, she would have been amazed at this incredible country home that seems to rise organically from the waving grassland. This is truly a stunning marriage of place, design, and function that looks to the future as well as pays homage to the past.

This MN GreenStar certified home with its own barn (a free-standing garage/shop) is set on eight-and-one-half acres of land that had once been farmed but now is being restored to its prairie heritage. Seeking to balance environmental impact and responsibility with their desire to create their true dream home, the homeowners chose to build with MN GreenStar certification. They selected geo-thermal for heating and cooling, Green finishes like concrete flooring and a metal roof, plus they added many recycled materials and products that include reclaimed wood and antique light fixtures.

From the outside, the white clapboard siding and galvanized metal roof showcase a reverence for the traditional architecture of the prairie. Crisp, clean lines and effectively placed windows, plus end load garages at both the main house and barn lend authenticity to the front facade. The long, recycled asphalt driveway with circle turn-around slips carefully between the native grasses and plantings that beautifully enhance this restored site.

One step inside and the delightful combination of old and new is breathtaking and welcoming. The large, stained-concrete floored foyer has an open staircase made of reclaimed wood to one side, and a private study to the other. Straight ahead is the two-story great room. A fabulous gas fireplace surrounded by wall-to-wall stone, expansive rustic mantle, and two custom, arched fir doors make a grand statement on the great room wall, while massive, reclaimed beams adorn its vaulted ceiling. Throughout the main level, new, four-panel horizontal stacked doors boast reused antique iron doorknobs, another paean to the past.

Adjacent and open to the dining space is the exceptional kitchen that is as historic as it is functional. Beautiful Cambria® countertops grace the abundant base cabinetry and the large island/snack bar. A natural finished, reclaimed beam from Manomin Resawn Timbers defines the range area. Custom-milled, reclaimed tongue and groove white pine on the walls with a washed-finish technique contrast with the state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances, including separate freezer and refrigerator appliance columns. Locally-crafted cabinetry with creamy white-painted finish is set off perfectly by the deep, adobe-colored stained concrete floors.

Steps from the kitchen, the rear entry is nestled off the oversized three-car attached garage and offers access to the spacious screen porch with its convenient Phantom Screens. Even in this utilitarian area you’ll find stunning environmentally-sensitive features such as Merlot Paperstone countertops, an antique cast iron sink, custom red oak door and stained beadboard walls that suggest this space has been transported from the 19th century.

Completing the main level is the private owners’ suite. Privacy is guaranteed in the large bedroom with vaulted ceiling and reclaimed wood floors. A 12- by 12-foot walk-in closet provides storage, while the grand bath features a soaking tub flanked by vanities with recycled glass countertops, a separate shower and water closet.

Geo-thermal heating and cooling assures low energy bills while the warm board system will keep the family cozy warm all winter long. Throughout the entire main level, hot water heats a thin layer of tin overlaying the floor substrate, an effective, efficient, and very Green choice.

The upstairs loft, lined with bookshelves for quiet reading, offers a quaint sitting room with a full bath. This extra living space includes a delightful overlook to the great room below. The lower level offers two full bedroom suites (one includes a future sauna) plus a large media/rec room that walks out to a private patio. More storage, stair access from the garage, and an elevator to the main level assures even more function.

Just a stroll away from the main house is the perfect craftsman’s retreat. Half of the main level space is the 24- by 24-foot shop designed for woodworking and other rustic hobbies, while the remainder provides plenty of storage space for equipment.

Please visit this Dream Home and experience how a desire to reclaim memories from the past truly can create benefits to our future and an unparalleled living experience. Sustainability has never looked so good!

Dream Home - Edina

Carl M. Hansen Companies
Parkwood Knolls
5305 Kelsey Terrace, Edina

A Link to the Past

Prepare to be welcomed back to yesterday. In this gracious home from Carl Hansen, you'll find timeless architecture based on early Edina Country Club designs, but with closets! Add in today's technology and construction techniques and you can see why this is a Dream Home.

This classic, brick two-story residence is one of the newest homes to be constructed in Parkwood Knolls. This Edina neighborhood is a unique community that has been taking shape over the past 50 years. That was when Carl Hansen's grandfather bought 600 acres near Interlachen Country Club to develop into a neighborhood he would be proud of. Through the years the Hansen family has continued to build, incrementally shaping Parkwood Knolls into a true neighborhood. There are still 36 opportunities available. The development's remaining sites offer high elevation parcels with long, sun-bathed views, generous building pads, ponds, forested enclaves and private, gently curving streets.

This home, like all of the homes here, has been designed to reflect the architectural significance of its neighbors. Architectural Designer, Tom Rauscher began with a vision to create an Edina home that truly sings. With careful attention to sun penetration plus outdoor living and cooking spaces, this is definitely a multi-seasonal residence. Unique features abound, like the Porte Cochere, which provides a break in sight lines to car storage while also offering a hard surface play space for children.

The dramatic front entry opens to a palatial gallery reception hall with exotic floors of African wenge and Brazilian sucupira wood in a classic, herringbone pattern. Next, a series of rhythmic, richly detailed arches offer dramatic sight lines to the main floor's formal and informal areas.

At every turn, details reflect extraordinary craftsmanship like custom-milled woodwork with three-piece profiles, extra thick ogee-edged granite, detailed stone work and custom-designed cabinetry that has smooth-as-silk hand glazed or painted finishes.

The residents of this Dream Home will find spaces that flow and live exceptionally well. The informal family space of kitchen, morning room, family gathering space and screen porch flow together in a rather open manner that's delightful yet very functional. The owners' suite has everything you need to create your own private retreat with its own morning bar, four-way vaulted ceiling, dramatic bed alcove, plus an opulent bath with a floating tub at its center, and walls of vanities, mirrors, and multi-faceted cabinetry. Not to be left out, teens and pre-teens will find the lower level designed just for them. The snack station, Wii game station, and media wall will make this the place for all their friends to gather.

From start to finish, this Dream Home does reflect the best of the past while embracing the future. Furnished in nouveau-classic motif, the interior showcases a modern yet traditional flavor that is simply perfect. Carl M. Hansen Companies is a third generation home builder whose roots were evidenced in landmark architecture of Lowry Hill, Edina's Country Club District and Golf Terrace Heights. Carl M. Hansen, like his father and grandfather before him, has maintained a hands-on approach and incorporated the best in building materials and skilled craftsmen. Many of these relationships have spanned the generations.

This home builder continues to focus on a home's functionality and technology while emphasizing that fine architecture, like fine art, should possess a timeless beauty reflecting the tastes of the homeowner.

We hope you'll visit this Dream Home and help the Builders Outreach Foundation in their charitable work.
