Minnesota GreenStar - Certified Green Homes and Remodeling
8/13/2008

Featuring eight homes in the 2008 Parade of Homes Fall Showcase SM

Green building is no longer a practice reserved for a niche market of industry professionals and consumers. The concept of Green building, which applies innovative design and construction techniques and development practices to conserve energy and other resources and improve occupant health and durability, is moving into the mainstream throughout the country.

Builders and remodelers in the Twin Cities are quickly embracing the new standard. Eight new MN GreenStar homes are featured on the 2008 fall Parade of HomesSM tour, and almost 300 builders and remodelers have attended MN GreenStar training.

MN GreenStar recognizes that different home buyers and homeowners will be seeking different aspects of Green. The program allows them to choose the most important aspects of Green for their own home. With three certification levels, MN GreenStar is designed to ensure each level meets stringent goals, yet allows a wide range of options within each category.

MN GreenStar was developed by a unique group of professionals that included environmental and building science experts, home builders, and remodelers. The originating partnership included the Green Institute (a nationally-recognized leader in the Green building movement), the Builders Association of the Twin Cities, and the National Association of Remodeling Industry - Minnesota. Experts from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the University of Minnesota, and Excel Energy were also tapped to help develop the program.

Today, Twin Cities’ residents can choose a MN GreenStar certified home that has been built under a regionally-appropriate Green building standard that embraces our unique climate concerns, building codes, and energy, materials and natural resources. Each home is subjected to an objective, third-party verification system that assures the new home or remodeling project performs as promised. And builders and remodelers are required to attend mandatory educational programs prior to building a MN GreenStar home.

“I have been really excited about the new MN GreenStar program,” commented 2008 Builders Association of the Twin Cities President K.C. Chermak, President of Pillar Homes Partner, Inc. “My clients have been asking about Green. Now with MN GreenStar I am able to help them discover the right degree of Green that fits their needs best. And with a Certified MN GreenStar home they can be assured that the Green building they want is what they will get.”

Both the new home and remodeling programs have completed the pilot phase and are now available for Minnesota families through their builders and remodelers. For more information visit their website www.mngreenstar.org.
