The Inside Scoop
www.lennar.com
www.awadandkoontz.com

We ran out of time on Dec. 30th, here’s Ali Awad of Awad & Koontz Architects Builders answer to the last question asked: “What’s happening with standard hallway widths and bathroom dimensions?”

Hallways have traditionally been about 36 inches wide and the standard bathroom was about 5 feet by 7 or 8 feet. I try to make hallways at least 42” inches wide, if space permits. This gets to the main reason people remodel their homes: To make them more comfortable to live in. Six extra inches of elbow room can make a big difference in how you feel as you move through your home. When designing bathroom remodels I try to keep in mind how the bathroom is going to be used. A bathroom that will be shared by more than one person should be compartmentalized if possible. I try to locate the more discreet parts of the bathroom (toilet and tub/shower) in their own room, separate from the sink. One person can take a shower while another is brushing their teeth. This two-room bathroom is more like 6 feet by 9 feet depending on the layout.
