Fitting Every Design in One: Creating an Eclectic Interior Design for Your Living Room
Fall is a great time to rethink your home’s living areas. Here are some fun interior design tips from our guest blogger, David Glenn. (Many of David’s tips are demonstrated in this living room image from Ron Clark Construction).
The living room is the most used room in the home and is a space to relax or entertain your guests. The style of the setting will determine how comfortable you feel in your home, making it important to update the look with modern details. To create a modern and stylish living room, there are a few important trends to follow.
Mix Patterns and Prints

Eclecticism is one of the latest looks in modern and stylish living rooms with different prints mixed together to create a high level of detail. You can mix different patterns with the pillows that you use, which will create a statement on a white couch. Consider using a slipcover if your couch isn’t of a neutral color shade. You can also mix stripes, florals, and trellis for a bold and inviting living room that looks updated. Use the same color shades with the prints to ensure that they don’t clash and can blend in with one another without appearing too uniform.
Use Light and Airy Furniture Pieces
A woven trunk makes a great coffee table, while the side table provides space for keepsakes while blocking little of the natural light in the floor to ceiilng windows. Artisan Home #14 by Lecy Bros. Homes & Remodeling.
Balance out your room with light and airy furniture pieces that don’t appear too heavy or bold. Use a glass coffee table to brighten up the setting or a lucite console table to hold picture frames and candles. Open weave coffee tables are also easy on the eyes and are the perfect place to stack a few magazines or books. This will allow the room to feel more spacious and less cramped with pieces that won’t detract from the environment.
Instead of replacing the furniture that you already own, repaint the surfaces with neutral colors to ensure that they are updated and work within a specific color scheme. You can also add modern hardware to enhance the style of each item to create a contemporary setting.
Add Metallic Accents
Metallic accent pieces add extra contrast to the room with cool metal touches that stand out. Consider adding a metallic paperweight on top of a stack of magazines or dressing up the fire mantle with a few gold flower vases. You can also incorporate metallic accents into the room with furniture pieces that have silver legs. Metallic accents are chic and contemporary with pieces that will allow the living room to look luxe.
Who needs a fireplace? The stone TV wall is warmed by end-stacked firewood in last June’s Artisan Home #7 by John Kraemer and Sons.
Although fireplaces were once a place to store a wood log or two throughout the year, they’re now a statement piece when they’re filled to the brim with dozens of logs. You can stack the firewood with the ends of the logs facing the room to enhance the visual appeal of the setting. This will draw more attention to the feature and will allow it to become the focal point in the room. Play with the shapes that are used in the room by adding an oversized area rug that features a chevron print to create a cozy lounge area.
Add Modern Sectionals
The couch is not only a place to relax, but it’s also a decor item that should contribute to the style of the living room. The couch offers a sleek and modern style that mimics the design of the 1960s. The item can be tucked away in the corner of the room where extra seating may be needed. Choose a sectional that has low-profile arms to ensure that it doesn’t take up too much space. Add a pillow or two without going overboard to ensure that the style of the sectional is still visible when you enter the room.
One of the latest modern looks to incorporate into your home is white on white details. The style creates a clean look that can still appear cozy by mixing different white textures, which will prevent the room from feeling cold or bare.
