How would you describe the style of this space?
The home has subtle farmhouse elements, including shiplap on the hood, X-detail in the island paneling and a subway tile backsplash. These classic details blend with the fresh finishes of the grey cabinetry, as well as the mixed metals of matte black and brushed gold, giving the home a fun, modern farmhouse vibe.
What influenced the design of this space?
Gold finishes! I knew I wanted to incorporate touches of gold without it becoming too over-the-top glam. I love the way the grey cabinetry and matte black faucet bring the design together and make the space feel relaxed and cozy.
What is one current design trend you can't get enough of?
Colorful kitchen cabinetry. White on white is no longer the only option! You can go bold with a deep navy, black or grey. If a colorful kitchen seems like too big of a commitment, you can just paint the kitchen island in a playful hue to add a pop of color.
How would you describe the style of this space?
The style of this space is modern farmhouse—very clean and simple. The interesting features of the home come out in the architecture while the finishes take a step back. White shiplap ceilings accentuate grand, vaulted ceilings with unique light fixtures. Black and white contrasting elements help to bring all the rooms together in one light and airy home.
How did you begin the design process?
Once we have decided what style the house will be, we begin like we always do—looking for inspiration in new and timeless trends. We like to create mood boards with different sensory images that will help to develop the overall feel of the space through texture and color.
What's the most important thing to consider before starting a design project?
We always make sure that everything we are choosing is cohesive in the grand scheme of the home. It is important that the finishes work together and ‘fit’ into the style of the home. From tile to cabinets to paint colors, we lay out all our materials on a table and as the amount of finishes grow through the project, we are always checking to see that one rooms flows to the next. If one element stands out, we immediately replace it with one that is will fit. We also staged the house ourselves, so from the beginning we integrated the house finishes along with the furniture which was very unique to be able to blend the two together while building the house.
What influenced the design of this space?
The development that we built this home in is set in a very quiet, airy countryside. We imagined the future owners of this home to be someone that sets the trend by living in this new development and loving the modern style blended with the old farmhouse style that emanates from the countryside.
Any tips for emulating design in this home?
Choose high contrasting finishes—black set against white. Use old and new elements—shiplap with gold lighting fixtures. Keep elements open and clean; we did this through the open floor plan, open shelving, and vaulted, white ceilings.
What is one current design trend you can't get enough of?
Whitewash hardwood floors! They are so versatile, easy to clean, and hide dust. We used it in the whole main level and we especially love the wide plank white oak in the lower level.
How would you describe the style of this space?
This space embodies a classic, timeless design with sophisticated influences.
How did you begin the design process?
When starting the design process for this master suite, I knew I wanted to incorporate black accents to further complement the windows. When I saw Silestone’s new marquina black marble countertop, I fell in love! I contrasted it with gold finishes, Carrara marble tile, and tied it all together with a mosaic accent runner.
What's the most important thing to consider before starting a design project?
Having inspiration, knowing the budget and understanding the time frame!
What influenced the design of this space?
What really inspired me about this master bathroom was the window centered above the vanity. It gave me the perfect opportunity to build the vanity within that space. Integrating the mirror within the flanking linen towers gives it a custom-built design, while still allowing for plenty of work space, natural light and storage.
Any tips for emulating design in this home?
Be willing to go outside your comfort zone. Push yourself to incorporate something you might not normally gravitate toward and don’t be afraid to try something new.
What is one current design trend you can't get enough of?
Cement tiles are everything right now! The beautiful patterns, colors and design flexibility make them fun and easy to incorporate in any space.
How do you begin the design process?
I start by reviewing the homebuyer’s profile and current space needs, forward thinking and taking into consideration upcoming design trends.
What’s the most important thing to consider before starting a design project?
We always consider the function and measurements of the space as well as the amount of light and client’s budget.
What influenced the design of this space?
The space was influenced by the chemistry tile and Cosmo fireplace unit from Fireplace Hearth and Home. The contemporary and rustic nature of the tile—while still having a serene feeling—inspired the furnishings and accessories.
What is one current design trend you can't get enough of?
2018 color palettes in taupe and warm grey! I also love distressed, weathered wood and rusted metal, used in contrast with gloss and polished finishes.
How would you describe the style of this space?
Modern Industrial. In design, contrast is king. Notice how the raw, edginess of the iron elements, found in the lighting and furnishings, are softened by the upholstered items. Playing off of antithetical characteristics gives life to a space in a way that leaves a lasting impression.
How did you begin the design process?
The kitchen establishes the tone for the feel of the home. When executed properly, kitchen design can elevate the cooking/eating area into a lively hub dedicated to creating experiences. I anchor myself in neutral selections in the flooring, cabinets and countertops. When consulting homebuyers, I advise to remain eternal in these choices since they are permanent fixtures in the home and should serve as a base for the rest of the canvas. From there, categories such as paint colors, accent pieces and wall accessories are the areas to take chances that showcase your personality.
What's the most important thing to consider before starting a design project?
Functionality of the space. Ultimately, we are designing spaces tailored to the flow of the family. We want our design to be aesthetically pleasing, even daring, but our choices also need to make sense for how they’ll be used. Leading with the question “What do I want to achieve in this space and what will my family be using it for?” will yield results that pay dividends for years to come.
Any tips for emulating design in this home?
If the style of this home speaks to you, layered neutrals should remain top of mind as you begin to design your space. Consider ways to incorporate matte black fixtures with adversative pairings such as light cabinets or a beveled subway tile backsplash.
What is one current design trend you can't get enough of?
Accent walls demand control of a room. Their versatility is endless and when implemented with purpose, they add depth, character and visual interest to any space. Whether wallpaper, stone or shiplap, adding an accent wall to your space is a surefire way to deliver an impact that overcompensates its modest price tag.
