Small Room? No Problem!
Small rooms can appear larger and work for you! Here are some tips from our guest blogger Sofia Lewis.
Having a small room is not a disaster, as much as some people like to think otherwise. Just because you are stuck in a small house or room does not mean the end of the world. The defect can be turned into an effect, because it does not really matter how much space you have – it is all about what you do with it in order to make it feel comforting and welcoming, where you can rest and relax, where you can feel at home.
If you’re facing the challenge of making over a small place to your liking and your needs, here are several tips for making small rooms sing.
- Colors – If the place you have to work with is small, you will do well to remember that dark colors will only make the situation worse. Dark colors absorb light, giving smaller rooms the feel of a cave and making the room appear smaller than it actually is. Light colors on the other hand will create the opposite effect – they give rooms an open, airy feeling. White surface can reflect the light better, thus making the size of the room seem larger.
- Light – What any small room can use plenty of is natural light. It can really open up the space. Remodeling? Then make sure to add windows large enough to make a connection to the outdoors. Window curtains should be light, sheer and you should use any opportunity to pull them back to allow more natural light in.
- Clutter – Nothing makes a small room feel smaller than too much clutter, and chances are a lot of it just gets in your way. Get organized and remove anything that you don’t use every day (can you say removal service?). You’ll be surprised at how much space you can free up to make the small room open and ready for your other needs.
- Furniture – Once you get rid of or store unneeded items, invest in furniture that does double duty to keep everything else neat and in one place. Get a bed with storage bins beneath for linens and out-of-season clothing. How about an ottoman that opens to hold games and books? There are plenty of solutions to aid you in the quest for finding more space while providing you with bedding and a place to sit.
These are simple enough tricks that you can implement in your small room to solve the problem of having limited space. Always remember that no matter what you fit in there, if you can design it in a way to truly please you, it doesn’t matter if the room is big or small.
