Tour & Toast to Women in Construction
To celebrate Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day, the Parade of Homes hosted a champagne toast at two magnificent Dream Homes on the Spring Parade of Homes. The goal was to bring together women in the housing industry to honor their impact, celebrate their accomplishments, and highlight the opportunities available to women in construction.
Did you know that women make over 90% of homebuying decisions? That’s just one of the many reasons women need to be represented in the homebuilding and construction industry. Currently women make up only 10% of the construction industry in the United States. Which means we have a lot of work to do. But that 10% of passionate and hardworking women in the industry are critical and they deserve to be celebrated.
Our Tour & Toast event did just that. Attendees enjoyed drinks and appetizers while mingling with fellow women in construction and touring both the Stonegate Builders and Swanson Homes Dream Homes featured on this Spring’s Parade of Homes. The group also gathered for a champagne toast and remarks from some inspiring industry leaders.
First, representatives from Housing First Minnesota welcomed everyone in attendance. “We wanted to hold this event to make sure all of you know that there is a place for you at our table and in all of our programs at Housing First Minnesota,” said Katie Elfstrom, Vice President of Public Affairs.
Hosts Amy Offerman, lead designer of Stonegate Builders, and Curt Swanson, owner of Swanson Homes, shared their admiration for working women paving roads to success in the construction industry. Finally, Jamie Tharp, (President) of Pulte Homes Midwest, spoke about what drew her to construction, how she balances motherhood and her career, how the industry can create more female leaders, and her advice to younger women looking to enter the industry.
Finally, Katie Elfstrom led attendees in a toast: “Cheers to all in our industry that are making this industry more welcoming and supportive for women in construction. And cheers to paving the way for more women and future generations of women to know that there are amazing career opportunities in this industry.”
We hope everyone had a fantastic Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day 2023!
