Advancing Energy-Efficient Homebuilding

As energy efficiency and sustainability continue to dominate much of the housing conversation, Minnesota builders are stepping up with forward-thinking strategies designed to create healthier, higher-performing homes for today’s buyers.

Launched in 2011 by Housing First Minnesota, Minnesota’s Green Path has become the state’s leading green building and energy-efficiency program for residential construction. The program provides clear, accessible Home Performance Reports(HPRs) and recognizes builders committed to elevating energy standards in new homes across the state.

Designated Green Path Builders commit to testing at least 75% of the homes they build annually, and they actively participate in ongoing professional development to stay at the forefront of energy-efficient building and design.

Levels of Green

Minnesota’s Green Path offers three energy-efficient certification levels: Energy Tested, Advanced, and Master. Every certified home receives an HPR featuring its Home Energy Rating System(HERS) Index, providing a comprehensive look at the home’s energy profile. The lower the score, the higher the efficiency.

·     Energy Tested is the foundation level, ensuring every home receives an HPR.

·     Advanced Certified highlights homes that meet higher-than-standard energy requirements and incorporate additional green features.

·     Master Certified, the program’s top tier, is reserved for homes that exceed Advanced standards and demonstrate exceptional energy performance.

These certifications recognize builders who go above and beyond standard practices—delivering homes that are not only more sustainable but also offer tangible benefits for homeowners, such as lower utility bills and improved comfort. In 2025, 66 homes earned Advanced or Master certification, further exemplifying the program’s growing impact.
