Celebrating Women in Homebuilding

March 8, 2024

Construction is widely recognized as one of the most male-dominated professions. But despite the underrepresentation of women in the trades, recent statistics indicate a growing trend of women entering the construction industry.

In 2020, women comprised of 46.8% of the overall U.S. workforce. However, the construction industry presents a stark contrast, with only 10.9% of construction workers being women, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This means that for every 10 individuals in construction-related roles, only one is a woman.

Yet, according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, the proportion of women in construction trades has recently reached its highest point in two decades. Whether actively participating on-site or efficiently managing tasks behind the scenes, women contribute significant value to both the job site and the office.

Tour & Toast to Women in Construction

The 2024 Spring Parade of Homes kicks off during National Women in Construction Week from March 3-9. At a time when the construction industry faces a serious labor crisis, we must support women in the construction industry. The Parade of Homes with its presenting organization, Housing First Minnesota, is proud to support efforts to diversify the homebuilding workforce.

To celebrate the inspiring leaders in the homebuilding industry and bring awareness to the career opportunities available to women, the Parade of Homes partnered up with Women in New Construction (WINC) to host “Tour & Toast to Women in Construction” at two Parade Homes on Thursday evening. An evening filled with networking, champagne, and inspiring toasts from women in the industry, Tour & Toast was the perfect lead into International Women’s Day and opening weekend for the spring tours.

Women Leading the Way

Women in Construction Week is an important time to share our appreciation for women in the industry who are leading the way for future generations. Housing First Minnesota and the Housing First Minnesota Foundation are proud to recognize these female leaders on their boards of directors.

“There are so many facets of construction. It is not just bricks and sticks; these homes take hundreds to thousands of people to create and implement all aspects of these projects. There are management, design, financial, process, marketing, administrative, and many more roles. Not only are we creating beautiful homes, but we are taking a wonderful approach to the entire process.”

– Amy Hendel, Hendel Homes

“One of the most enchanting aspects of my career in construction is the dynamic nature of the work. Every day presents a new challenge and an opportunity to learn and grow. No two days are ever the same. I would like women to recognize the diverse opportunities available in the homebuilding industry. Women bring unique perspectives and skills that contribute significantly to the success and innovation of construction projects. It’s an industry that values creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork, making it an ideal space for women to thrive.”

– Kristin Reinitz, Admit One Home Systems

“I love working in collaboration with various professionals to overcome challenges in the industry by problem solving and creative thinking. It is very rewarding to see a project come together and overcome the obstacles along the way. Many different careers are needed to make building someone’s home a reality. This industry can be very fulfilling.”

– Rebecca Remick, City Homes, LLC

“To all the young women considering a career in construction, know that this industry is thirsty for what you can bring to the table. You’re going to get noticed—but don’t let that scare you—it’s an opportunity to shine.”

What the Fed’s Rate Cut Means for Homebuyers
