This 1960 Columbia Heights rambler was an untouched time capsule until we reimagined it for modern living. The goal was to break down barriers between the home and its stunning views of Highland Lake. We removed a central load-bearing wall, creating a seamless open-concept flow that connects the kitchen and living room. A massive new 12-foot picture window now serves as the backdrop, flooding the space with natural light and lake views.
The design creates a warm, Mid-Century Modern aesthetic. We installed rich cherry cabinetry topped with sleek white quartz and sourced reclaimed oak flooring to perfectly match the home’s original hardwoods. The project`s architectural centerpiece is the structural solution itself: a necessary post-and-beam system that we wrapped in custom cherry woodwork, turning a structural requirement into a defining design feature.
Executing this vision required extensive technical expertise, including complex structural calculations, new load transfers, and adding new foundation footings through the basement. The result is a high-functioning home perfect for entertaining, complete with a large island and a new patio featuring a hot tub.
