Q: What are some basic closet must-haves?

  1. The correct hanging heights for each person. It makes such a difference depending on how tall or short you are!
  2. Drawers to keep things clean and organized. They’re an easy way to sort and categorize similar while also preventing dust buildup.
  3. The right spacing for easy accessibility. The easier it is to see what you are looking for, the more efficient you’ll be at selecting your outfit for the day and keeping items organized long-term.
  4. A designated area for accessories. There never seems to be enough room for the extras. But your whole wardrobe — and that includes shoes, hats, scarves, purses, and belts — needs a home in the closet.
  5. An area for laundry. Whether that’s a built-in laundry chute or simply a designated area for a laundry basket or hamper, planning around your laundry needs will help keep floors and chairs from becoming dumping grounds for dirty clothes.

Q: What customization options are available?

Specialty lighting is becoming more and more desired in the closet. Many closet spaces are small and do not always have a window, so built-in lighting can help make your outfit styling a smoother and more efficient process. Lighting can also highlight your more cherished items — like your purse collection or hat display.Know that there are customization options for every need — even hiding a safe or creating a space for dozens of ties! We’re always figuring out the best way to make room for the small items in the closet.

Q: What are the most popular priorities you hear from clients when designing a new closet?

First and foremost, a closet must function well but also have the right balance of style. A great closet has a good layout, gives a sense of order, maximizes function, and reduces stress when selecting outfits in the morning.Another popular priority is proper storage for a variety of items. Different types of clothing and accessories require different organizational needs. There is not always a one-size-fits-all approach, but there are unique solutions for each!I also hear a lot of clients come in and say, “just make it pretty!” Nowadays, people want even the hidden spaces in their homes to be well-designed. Making details shine and look more sophisticated is important. One client may be looking for lots of molding and a more classic look — this requires attention to the shape of the closet and the forms that it takes. Other clients may prefer the crisp and clean lines of a more modern design — this means creative ways to conceal the clutter.
